Bottoms up! In Spring Valley, CA, 21-year-old Josh is as straight as a ruler, but his 21-year-old bride-to-be Erica is a sloshy little drunk who loves to par-tay. They met on MySpace, and Josh thought someone was playing a trick on him because “damn, she’s fine.” Erica and Josh are Christians, and that appeals to her because he has “high morals” and they’re “basically on the same page about everything.” Because of those shared beliefs, they’ve decided to wait until they’re married before they have sex.
Erica’s “used to getting what I want.” That includes feeding her shoe addiction that stands at over 200 pairs. Josh points out that her spending sprees will have to stop once they're married – because Erica’s mom won't be taking care of her, Josh will. Josh knows they’re going to be poor once the "I do's" are said, and he’d like a steady hand on the financial steering wheel.
Money is also on the minds of Erica's family. Erica is “really close” with her family and they’re all “really honest with each other,” especially when they sit down to big family dinners. Erica has two aunts who don’t approve of the upcoming wedding, though. Licia and Coco are “on a different page” than Erica. Licia doesn’t want Erica to get married right now because, she says, money would be a big problem for the young newlyweds. Licia would like her postpone the wedding so that Erica can continue her modeling career and sock away some money. That way, money won’t become an issue once she’s married, and she won’t be so dependent on Josh. Besides, Licia says, “You’re too young.” Erica hasn’t even known Josh for a year; she should get to know him first. “Give him some time.” However, Erica’s not having any of that.
Josh doesn’t party, and according to Erica, “he doesn’t like it when I do.” Still, she’d like to go out and party with her friends after she’s married. Sure, she can still go out, but “you can’t drink alcohol.” Josh is really against the booze. He doesn’t like how “it changes people.”
When they go out with their friends, Josh may limit Erica to one drink, and she has to ask permission from Josh to actually order it. But one drink just opens up the floodgate of alcohol, because while technically she only orders one drink, Erica’s enabling family and girlfriends let her sip and sip and sip from their glasses. Of course, maybe she’s just rehearsing to chug the wedding champagne.
Aunt Coco still hasn’t decided whether she’s going to the wedding. She can barely get the words out, because she’s crying so much over Erica’s impending nuptials. Coco doesn’t want what happened to her to happen to Erica. She’d really like Erica to keep modeling and not get married. Once you get married, “it’s over,” she says. Then she offers her niece those precious three little words that all brides need to hear from concerned family: “You’ll be sorry.” Thanks, Aunt Coco!
